Walpurgis
Night
A
women named Valborg was born in 710
some where in Northern Europe.
It was told that she was a daughter
to the great King Richard.
But her name seems more to be a
celtic, german or scandinavian one.
People think that she was borned in England.
Valborg worshipped as a fruitful
goddess.
Valborg decided to become a nun and
travelled to Germany in company with
her two brothers.
There she established the catholic
abbey Heidenheim in Wurtemburg
Valborg
died the 25 th of february in 779 e kr.
Her
name
Valborg are still to be in the
catholic calendar this day.
In
the
1 of may
in
779
she
became a saint.
This
happends almost in the same time as
the spring and fertility
celebrations begin, around the 30 th
of April.
Therefor her name was associated
with that.
She
was adored in the same way as the
viking has adored the spring.
As the vikings travelled to Europe
theese to dates was put together in
a Walpurgis Night celebration.
It became a time to celebrate the
spring and to get together with ones
friends for a speciual
celebrationceremony.
Long
time ago people think that the
spring arrived and the winter was
gone the
30 th of april.
In
the 1
of may it was time for the cattle to
let out for grazing.
But
before they could be let out, the
farmer has to get rid of the witches,
ghoosts, trolls and the beast of
prey away.
Therefor he has to set big fires to
scare them away in Walpurgis Night.
But
in the same time people enjoyed the
fire and have fun around it with
singing and dancing and such things.
In
Uppsala and Lund, that is count as a
University cities, they celebrate
much more.
Students are wearing their white
hats and sing a lot of spring songs.
The city are full of people who want
to look att the celebration.
In Uppsala students also are
travelling with amall and wird
homemade boats through a little
waterfall in the middle of Uppsala
city.
When
we celebrate Walpurgis Night
nowadays, we celebrate the arrival
of the spring.
Most
peopla has cleaned up their gardens
and also plant some flowers.
The
rubbish that is left are put on fire.
In
our whole country there are fires
that are put on from northern to
southern sweden, in the country and
in the city.
There
is a speciual feeling around the
spring this evening (and night).
